| spa |

oaire.objetives | The main goal of this joint proposal between Colombia Universidad del Valle, and Universidad del Cauca and Germany Universitat of Bremen, and AWI is to examine the role of algae on bioremoval processes for treating polluted coastal waters. Within this context, the project will assess the following experimental objectives : 1. To examine the algal stress physiology induced by metals accumulation by monitoring photosynthesis, respiration and growth rates in two dominant macroalgal species in a tropical polluted estuary (Buenaventura Bay), Pacific coast of Colombia. 2. To compare the bioaccumulation and uptake rates of heavy metals by Bostrychia calliptera, considered as a perennial species and by Rizoclunium riparium, considered as an opportunistic species. 3. To determine the spatial and temporal variability of bioaccumulation rates in field populations of two dominant macroalgal species in the estuary. 4. To evaluate the effect of some environmental factors (pH, light, and salinity) on the metal accumulation and uptake rates by the two selected species. Objectives 1 and 2 There are significant differences on the photosynthetic-respiration activity and growth rates between a perennial species exposed to different heavy metals concentration levels and a opportunistic species. Objective 3 Significant differences of bioaccumulation rates are found between species along a spatial and tempral gradient in the estuary. Objective 4 There are significant differences of metabolic responses between exposed and non-exposed plants growing under a salinity, light and pH conditions. | spa |
