In this project it is proposed to study the electronic, optical, transport and critical properties of semiconductor and superconductor ring-like systems. The main objective of the project is to consider the effect of the reduction of dimensionality and the presence of a non-trivial topology on some properties in such semiconductor and superconductor systems. In particular, the following problems will be considered: (i) Tunnelling through single- and double barrier heterostructures including the effects of applied magnetic fields, of self-consistent charge distributions as well as the effects of impurity states and self-assembled quantum dots. (ii) Study of exciton states and Aharonov-Bohm Oscillations in quantum rings. (iii) Study of magnetic properties of mesoscopic superconducting disks and rings for various different states of flux quantization. For the study of the problems involved we will use the effective mass approximation within the variational scheme, the Green function technique developed for non-equilibrium systems by Keldysh. For the description of the quantum rings we will employ a single particle picture, in the frame of an adiabatic approximation. The variational procedure will be used in order to solve the Ginzburg-Landau equations for the order parameter in the case of type-II superconducting disks and rings. This proposal is planned to be developed in 36 months, starting on 01 January 2004. It stipulates the involvement of a recent Ph.D.(who was supported by COLCIENCIAS during his doctoral formation) and it is intented to contribute to the training of human resources by offering research problems for 2 Ph. D., 4 Master and 4 undergraduate students. It is considered the collaboration with two national condensed matter groups and with two international assesors.spa
