Debe contener la información necesaria para darle al lector una idea precisa de la pertinencia y calidad proyecto, éste debe contener una síntesis del problema a investigar, el marco teórico, objetivos, la metodología a utilizar y resultados esperados. This research proposal aims at the understanding of structural, morphological, electronic, magnetic and transport properties of oxide heterostructures based on perovskite magnetic manganite, ferroelectric and multiferroic oxides, transition metal oxides and rare earth transition oxides; all of them are specific, oxide-based, nanostructured material systems for which we hope to unravel promising properties. To ground the research in reality, here we propose specific material systems built on a variety of materials for which we have preliminary results, such as Ca-doped lanthanum and strontium manganite; perovskite ferroelectric and transition metal oxides, rare earth/transition metal oxides. This time, the emphasis of the research is on oxide interfaces. Because of the fundamental nature of this research proposal, the goals are flexible and adjustable as the milestones of the project are attained. Wherever appropriate, we highlight the potential applications and impact of the project findings. We understand that, because of the high complexity of the subject under study, it must be addressed from both experimental and theoretical points of view and with a multidisciplinary approach by researchers in physics, chemistry, and engineering. To understand the complex interplay of lattice, chemical composition, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom a wide range of experimental, theoretical and computational techniques must be used. Current knowledge gaps can be filled by a systematic approach that involves symbiotic efforts in theory and synthesis, together with structural, electronic and magnetic characterization of materials and interfaces. It is clear that, in order to achieve potentially useful nano-electronics devices, functionalities will have to be introduced by integrating oxide materials in the form of epitaxial films or superlattices. In this perspective, it is important to reach a high crystalline quality at the atomic scale and to understand how strain and size reduction affect the physical properties. The proposed goals, objectives, and methodology target the influence of growth parameters on the structural and physical properties of thin films and multilayers of oxide materials and their interfaces. We will focus on the combination of ferromagnetic, semiconducting, metallic, and dielectric materials properties of oxide based thin films and artificial heterostructures. We will study the fabrication and characterization of intrinsic multiferroics, artificial ferroelectric/ ferromagnetic- ferromagnetic/ antiferromagnetic- transition metal oxides/rare earth transition oxides- heterostructures. Detailed study of the interfacial effects in these systems may help to understand how electronic and magnetic properties of the interface can be controlled and tuned by proximity, loss of symmetry, violation of charge neutrality, structural imperfections, confinement and other physical phenomena - including exchange bias, colossal ionic conductivity, metal behavior, superconductivity, magnetism and phase separation. We anticipate that the work proposed here will provide a toolbox for synthesizing new materials and characterizing novel properties. Another goal is to contribute to the development of the national scientific capacity with the completion of at least one undergraduate thesis, and the beginning of two MSc and two doctoral thesis. The findings will be discussed in two international scientific conferences, and submitted for publication to two scientific articles in indexed journals.spa
