Leishmaniasis are considered by the World Health Organization as a severe public health problem worldwide. Annually, worldwide recorded about two million cases, of which 1.5 million are cutaneous (90%), with 350 million people at risk of contracting this disease. In Colombia, the clinical form of increased incidence is the cutaneous, and the agent responsible for 70% of cases, Leishmania (Viannia) panamensis. Today, drug treatments for leishmaniasis include the use of pentavalent antimonials (sodium stibogluconate and meglumine antimoniate), amphotericin B, paromomycin, pentamidine and miltefosine, all associated with significant toxicity, high rates of relapse and occurrence of resistance by parasites in endemic certain areas; reason, it is extremely important the search and identification of active molecules in natural resources as sources for the development of new chemotherapeutic agents antiprotozoal.

Leishmaniasis is a serious public health problem worldwide. In Colombia, its cutaneous clinical form has the greatest incidence, and is mainly caused by species of Leishmania (Viannia) panamensis. Given the ineffectiveness of the available treatments, it is necessary to find new therapeutic agents in plant species used in folk medicine.
